Baby Chandelier aka R's Christmas Gift

Okay it's really more of a baby mobile, but I really needed something colorful to hang above his crib so I'd get a few more moments of peace and quiet in the morning. So it's kind of a Christmas gift for both of us.

The materials were simple - colored paper, big hole punch, sewing machine, ribbon, double sided tape and a big metal ring.

First I cut out a bunch of circles, I like rainbows so I did them the colors of the rainbow. Then I ran them through the sewing machine and sewed a bunch of strands together - it took like 5 minutes maybe to do all of them, hardly any time at all.

Then to attach them to my metal ring, I stuck some double sided scrap book tape on there, then stuck the little thread ends on those, then wrapped ribbon around the whole thing. I figured it would be easier than hot glue (because there is always a danger of burning yourself with hot glue) and I could always take it off when I didn't like it anymore. I also used the tape to secure the remaining end of the ribbon.

And to hang it, I used a hanger from HD that was $3 and can hold up to 35 lbs. For the record this thing weighed only a couple ounces so I'm confident the hanger will hold it securely.

Is it the fanciest fancy ever made? No, but did it only cost like $5 and doesn't look like crap? Yes.

So anyone else seen the DIY planked walls that have been going around? I always like Layla's from TLC but never wanted to use MDF, so I like that they are using $12 4ft x 8ft sheets of plywood. If I did do this, it would happen on my entryway wall. I originally had started hand painting a design but then I changed creative directions because it was taking too long. I fiddled a little in photoshop with it to see what it could potentially look like were I to do it.

Let's just say I suck at Photoshop. I totally lifted the PB gallery wall pic for this.

What I really like in this picture though is the lights they have added - in our front room we have no overhead lights, so if we could potentially do something like this to add in some lighting that would be pretty cool. Also instead of doing a full gallery wall I would do a big coat rack on the wall since it becomes a natural dumping ground for when people walk in.

Anyway, Happy Friday and may your weekend be glorious and long.

  1. I love the Chandy. so fabulous. I always use the quarter inch ply for my wainscoting needs- saved me a lot of cha-ching, for sure.
